Recently a friend asked me to suggest some accessories which would help add a little flair to her functional home. She felt it lacked that designer touch which we find in magnificently modeled homes on magazine spreads. I could completely relate to how she felt and I’m sure many of you face this dilemma in your own homes or rental apartments.

As I started to collect images to inspire her, I realized the spaces which I was drawn to were not full of expensive designer accessories or elements which you can’t have/create without burning a hole in your pocket. Many of the images I’ve selected to share in this post show homes which draw the eye in with just a few interesting elements. The main elements could be one or a combination of any of these – a painting/sculpture, a piece of furniture, a wall painted in an accent color/in a unique wallpaper, an interesting rug or any other item you may find in a home furnishings store, online or at a flea market. These showstoppers sometimes end up providing a direction for the style and color palette for everything around them.

The most interesting homes I’ve seen tell the story of the people who live in them. Their love for color, art, travel, cooking, music or simplicity. Your home doesn’t need to look like a staged space which no one inhabits. It should be a reflection of your passions and should be organized it in a way that makes sense for you!

An ocean hued rug and star shaped pendant liven up this home office

Below is an excellent example of something which can be created at home!

Triangles cut out of colored paper form the headboard of this otherwise simple bedroom

This mundane staircase wall becomes a gallery of family portraits. The suspended pendant lights reinforce the height and slope of the roof

This is my favorite - a unique and easy way to make a statement!

A disco ball hovers above wood floor which is painted white

Just one wallpapered wall creates an eye catching moment here while the rest of the space is kept simple

In this kitchen glass panel doors below the island along with mosaic green tiles in the background add some fun while orange accents help to break the monotony.

Wallpaper on the ceiling and walls above the wainscoting draw the eye above the functional aspects of a bathroom…brilliant!

During my research I also came across some unique accessories which I would love to buy for my own home…once I have one!

A mix and match of prints and complementary hues

This floral lampshade would brighten up anyone’s days! [Via Flat Vernacular]

A crochet stool in my living room? Yes please! [Via Yarning]

Baskets can provide a beautiful storage opportunity for everything from laundry to toys! [Via Faiella Design]

What do you say, do these spaces have the wow factor? Feel free to reach out to me if you need more inspiration to spruce up your spaces!
